TRAVEL BOOKS

GM Spencer has travelled principally to wilderness areas, forests and mountains. In the early seventies, he and his family visited most of the then national parks and reserves in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Their adventures and misadventures during five years in East Africa are humourously recorded in Grizzling in the Drizzling Serengeti.

With a similar emphasis upon the wilds, and often in the company of his Singapore colleagues, he has visited the forests, reserves and mountains of southeast Asia, including Gunung Tahan, Endau Rompin, Gunung Mulu and Gunung Trusmadi in  Malaysia, Ujung Kulon in Java, Gunung Leuser and Kerinci-Seblat in Sumatra, Dumoga-Bone in Sulawesi  and Mt Apo in Mindanao. These events are recalled also in comic vein in Rum Shrinks Elephants.

Both books are published by the Orange Press, New South Wales www.orangepressbooks.com.

More recently, GM Spencer has focused on Thailand, notably in the Khao Yai area, including Pang Sida, and Khao Soi Dao further south, as well as Kaeng Krachan and the western forests complex around Um Phang, and other reserves in the north and northeast such as Phu Khieo.
The forests on these visits have been painted by David Khor Kok Kheng, some of whose works are reproduced here.

G.M.Spencer’s highly recommended agents in Thailand are Nang Udorn Jantboworn, bird specialist and general tour guide +66 (0)86 655 3246, and Apple, general tour guide +66 (0)87 246 5887 and www.khaoyaitourguide.com
